Elizabeth Ann Boylen

Elizabeth Ann “Betty” “Gamamma” Boylen (Grubaugh), 77, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family, on January 11, 2025.

A lifelong resident of Portage Lakes and a proud 1965 graduate of Coventry High School, Betty later graduated from the Akron Medical-Dental Institute in 1983. While her professional life was about helping others, it was her roles as a Mom, Gamamma, Sister, and all-around sweetheart that truly defined her.

Betty was the cherished mother of six children and the adored grandmother of many grandchildren. It was no secret that she worshipped her granddaughters Jessica, Hannah, and Gabrielle.

Her love extended to her loyal sidekicks, Max her dog and Baxter her cat. Her fur children never doubted their high-rank in the household hierarchy.

Betty was an uncomplicated woman who found immense joy in life’s simple pleasures: floating in her pool, arm-chair shopping, feeding the neighborhood birds (and any other animal that may or may not have needed a snack) and basking in the chaos of her family gatherings. Her wit was as sharp as her hugs were warm, and her sense of humor could brighten even the dullest day—Betty could make you laugh until your sides hurt and then feed you until you couldn't move.

She had a heart as big as the Portage Lakes. She gave freely, loved fiercely, and believed in the good in everyone.

To say those who knew Betty loved her would be an understatement. She was the life of the party, the rock of her family, and the friend who always answered the phone—even if it was to listen to your longest story yet.

Betty was truly a gift from God, loaned to us for just a little while. Though our hearts ache at her passing, we find comfort in knowing she is now basking on the Shores of Heaven, undoubtedly cracking jokes with our Lord Jesus and keeping everyone well-fed.

At her request, a private ceremony will be held with family only. If you’d like to honor Betty’s memory, please consider donating to a local animal shelter or veterans' organization in her name.

She will be so deeply missed by all who knew her—but what a privilege and honor it was to call her Mom.
