Derek Thomas Sowell

Derek Thomas Sowell passed away at the age of 47 on September 10, 2024. Born on April 13, 1977, just outside of Boston, Derek grew up in Bellingham, Massachusetts. He was the son of Thomas Sowell and Laurie Magnussen and is predeceased by his stepfather, Kirk Magnussen. Derek leaves behind his parents, his sisters, Ranae Sowell Mogensen and Gretchen Sowell Marois, and their families. Derek also leaves behind two beautiful daughters, Haylie Sowell, and Aryana Sowell, two stepsons, Dominic DeFranco, and Anthony DeFranco, and a granddaughter, Harley Owens. As well as his loving girlfriend, Cortney White. 

In his younger years, Derek was active in Boy Scouts and played baseball and football in school. He also enjoyed riding his bike around the neighborhood, going to southern Rhode Island beaches and flying kites with his father, camping, fishing, boating, and spending the weekends at Lake Manchaug with family and friends. 

In his early 20s, Derek moved to Cleveland, Ohio. A lifelong Boston Sports fan, Derek proudly wore his team’s logos and cheered loudly for New England, especially his beloved Patriots. As a tradesman, he was skilled in auto mechanics, roofing, carpentry, and landscaping. He was a charismatic and free spirit who loved the outdoors and lived in the moment. 

Derek was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend who will be sorely missed by many. To share memories and honor his life, a celebration of life will be held in his hometown of Bellingham, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, Derek’s family asks that you consider donating to Summa Health Hospice in Akron, Ohio, which took such wonderful care of Derek during his final days.
